City officials in Paterson, New Jersey, have requested $5 million in federal funding to renovate and expand the Riverside Vets Senior Citizen Community Center on Fifth Avenue — the city’s only dedicated recreation space for older residents.
The proposed upgrades include installing an elevator, modernizing bathrooms and the kitchen, and refurbishing the lower level to accommodate more programs and services. The improvements aim to enhance accessibility, safety, and capacity for the city’s growing senior population.
The City Council approved the resolution on May 19, formally asking Congress to include the funding in the 2027 fiscal year budget. Representative Nellie Pou, whose district covers Paterson, confirmed that the preliminary federal spending bill already earmarks the funds for the project.
“Having an accessible, renovated center would be a big win for our Paterson seniors,” Pou said, noting that her office collaborated closely with community leaders to secure the allocation. She added that she will continue working to ensure the funding survives the appropriations process and becomes law.
The Riverside Vets center currently serves as a hub for meals, social activities, and essential services for local seniors. If approved, the renovation would transform it into a modern, inclusive facility capable of supporting expanded programming and community engagement.
