Luanda — May 25, 2026 — As Africa celebrates its unity and progress, this year’s Africa Day carries a powerful message: water and sanitation are the keys to accelerating sustainable development across the continent.
In her message marking the occasion, Denise António, UNDP Resident Representative in Angola, emphasized that access to clean water and safe sanitation defines the course of health, food security, dignity, and economic opportunity. She highlighted how women and children bear the heaviest burden when water is scarce — walking long distances, missing school, and facing limited opportunities.
Across Angola, the connection between water and development is visible in every community. From solar‑powered irrigation systems supporting farmers to young innovators transforming agriculture, water remains the common thread linking livelihoods, resilience, and growth.
UNDP continues to work alongside the Government of Angola to strengthen the links between water, energy, and food security, ensuring that investments translate into tangible benefits for people. António noted that Africa Day is not only a celebration but also a reminder of shared responsibility — to build an Africa where everyone has access to the foundations they need to thrive.
