Tourism is creating new economic opportunities for local businesses and communities in Berat, one of Albania’s most important cultural destinations.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Union are supporting Albania’s tourism sector through investments in transport infrastructure, business development and workforce skills. The initiative aims to improve access to tourist attractions while helping local entrepreneurs offer better services and experiences.
New and upgraded roads and bridges are making destinations such as Tomorri National Park and Berat’s historic fortress more accessible to visitors. Improved connectivity is expected to encourage longer stays, attract more tourists and increase spending within local communities.
The programme is also supporting family-owned wineries, agritourism businesses and other local enterprises. This assistance enables entrepreneurs to improve their facilities, develop new tourism products and reach wider markets.
The investments form part of the €100 million Albania Infrastructure and Tourism-Enabling Project, financed by the EBRD and the EU. By strengthening infrastructure and supporting local businesses, the project aims to generate employment, encourage sustainable tourism and improve Albania’s competitiveness as a European travel destination.
The initiative demonstrates how responsible tourism investment can protect local heritage while creating lasting economic benefits for communities across Albania.
