The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), in partnership with the Government of Belize and the Belize Social Investment Fund (BSIF), has officially launched the Basic Needs Trust Fund Eleventh Programme (BNTF 11) to support poverty reduction, strengthen community resilience, and improve living conditions for vulnerable communities across Belize.
The launch event brought together government representatives, CDB officials, development partners, community leaders, project beneficiaries, consultants, and members of the media to mark the start of a new phase of community-focused investments aimed at improving access to essential services and creating better opportunities for residents.
Under the BNTF 11 programme, Belize will receive more than US$5.2 million in funding to support six community development projects during the four-year project cycle. The investment will focus on four education projects and two water-related projects designed to improve essential services and strengthen community well-being.
At the launch, government officials highlighted the importance of targeted development programmes in reducing inequality and supporting vulnerable populations. The initiative aligns with global development goals by improving access to infrastructure, education, water services, and other resources that help communities build stronger and more sustainable futures.
The latest funding cycle also recognizes more than two decades of BNTF’s impact in Belize. Over the past 25 years, the programme has financed 79 community sub-projects in the country, representing approximately US$23.79 million in investments.
These projects have supported education, human resource development, livelihoods, water and sanitation systems, and community infrastructure improvements. The investments have benefited thousands of Belizeans by improving learning environments, expanding access to safe water, strengthening community services, and creating new opportunities for economic and social development.
CDB officials emphasized that the success of BNTF has been driven by strong partnerships between governments, communities, and development organizations. By involving communities in project planning and implementation, the programme ensures that investments address local needs and deliver long-term benefits.
The BNTF 11 funding cycle is part of the Caribbean Development Bank’s broader efforts to promote inclusive and sustainable development throughout the region. The programme continues to support initiatives focused on education, water and sanitation, community infrastructure, livelihoods, and climate resilience.
Through continued investment in community-based projects, BNTF aims to help Belize and other Caribbean nations strengthen resilience, reduce poverty, and improve quality of life for vulnerable populations.
