City of Barrie has opened applications for its 2026 Recreation and Sport Community Grant programme, offering funding to local organizations focused on expanding access to recreation and sports opportunities across the city.
Applications for the grant programme will be accepted until June 12, 2026, with successful recipients expected to be announced later in June.
The funding initiative is designed to support community-based recreation and sports programmes that improve health, wellbeing, and social engagement among Barrie residents. Eligible organizations can apply for support under two categories: new or innovative recreation and sports programming, and capital improvement projects.
Mayor Alex Nuttall said the programme plays an important role in helping remove barriers to participation while supporting local organizations that create active and connected communities.
Eligible applicants include incorporated non-profit organizations, registered charities, and community associations operating on a non-profit basis. For-profit businesses may also participate through partnerships with eligible non-profit organizations, provided they do not receive direct financial benefit from the funding.
Since the programme launched in 2022, the City of Barrie has awarded more than $830,000 to support recreation infrastructure improvements and community-based sports initiatives focused on resident health and wellness.
In addition to grant applications, the city is also inviting residents to apply for positions on the Adjudication Panel responsible for evaluating grant submissions. Two community members will be appointed to serve on the panel through the end of 2026.
City officials say the programme reflects Barrie’s continued investment in accessible recreation, local sports development, and community wellbeing initiatives that support residents of all ages and abilities.
