Hastings Borough Council has launched a new £700,000 funding programme aimed at improving sports and leisure facilities across Hastings over the next two years.
The initiative is designed to support upgrades and enhancements to local leisure infrastructure, helping create spaces where residents can stay active, improve wellbeing, and strengthen community connections.
The first funding round is now open, with applications scheduled to close on July 12, 2026. Community groups, sports organisations, and leisure providers are expected to benefit from the programme through funding for facility improvements and infrastructure development projects.
Council officials said the funding will help local organisations address growing financial pressures while maintaining and improving sports and recreational services for residents.
Glenn Haffenden, leader of Hastings Borough Council and lead councillor for sport and leisure, said the programme was created in response to challenges faced by local sports and leisure groups struggling to secure resources for essential upgrades and operational improvements.
The council highlighted the broader physical and mental health benefits associated with access to sports and leisure activities, including opportunities for social interaction, community engagement, and improved wellbeing.
By running the scheme across multiple funding rounds, the council aims to support both projects that are ready for immediate implementation and organisations that may need additional time to prepare development plans.
The funding initiative reflects growing local government efforts across the UK to invest in community sports infrastructure and improve public access to recreational facilities amid increasing demand for health and wellbeing programmes.
