Community-led development is helping expand access to healthcare, clean water, education and child protection across sub-Saharan Africa. Bread and Water for Africa® works with local organizations in 11 countries to address critical needs in undeserved communities.
Through partnerships with grassroots organizations, the initiative supports rural clinics with medicines, medical supplies and equipment. Mobile healthcare services are also reaching remote communities, including villages in the Democratic Republic of the Congo where access to doctors and essential medicines remains limited.
Water, sanitation and hygiene initiatives are another major focus. Projects include drilling boreholes, repairing wells, protecting freshwater sources and constructing school latrines. These interventions are particularly important for girls, helping create safer conditions that allow them to remain in school.
The organization also supports children through orphan care, education assistance, school meals and food self-sufficiency programmes. In 2025, its programmes provided healthcare services to more than 114,000 people across 70 hospitals, health centres and clinics, while WASH projects helped more than 70,300 people gain access to safe and clean water.
The community-driven approach focuses on working with organizations already operating on the ground. By strengthening local capacity and supporting existing healthcare and community systems, these programmes aim to create more sustainable solutions to health, water and poverty challenges.
As humanitarian funding faces growing pressure, continued investment in locally led initiatives could play an important role in helping vulnerable communities across Africa build greater resilience and long-term self-sufficiency.
