South Korea has contributed $3 million to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to support vulnerable women and children facing hunger and malnutrition in Afghanistan.
The funding, provided by South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is expected to assist around 24,500 vulnerable women and children across Afghanistan over the next 12 months.
The contribution comes as Afghanistan continues to face a severe food and nutrition crisis. According to the WFP, about 17.4 million people require urgent food assistance, while millions of women and children are expected to need treatment for malnutrition in 2026.
The agency has also warned that a critical funding shortage is forcing it to reduce life-saving food and nutrition programs despite growing humanitarian needs. Nearly 3.7 million children and 1.2 million pregnant and breastfeeding women are projected to experience acute malnutrition this year.
South Korea has been a long-standing supporter of humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan. In December 2024, the country provided $5 million to support food assistance, nutrition programs, school meals and livelihood initiatives.
The latest $3 million contribution is expected to help WFP continue delivering essential food and nutrition support to some of Afghanistan’s most vulnerable communities as the humanitarian crisis deepens.
