Serbian food producer Tira is moving towards greener and more efficient operations after installing a rooftop solar power plant with support from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Union.
The investment is helping the company reduce electricity costs, lower its carbon footprint and strengthen its competitiveness as sustainability becomes increasingly important in European markets.
Tira produces nuts, grains and nut butters and is among the small and medium-sized enterprises benefiting from the SME Go Green programme in the Western Balkans.
The programme combines EBRD financing with EU grant incentives to help SMEs invest in renewable energy and other green technologies. By supporting businesses in adopting cleaner energy solutions, the initiative aims to improve energy efficiency while encouraging private-sector participation in the green transition.
For Tira, the rooftop solar installation is expected to reduce reliance on conventional electricity sources and provide greater resilience against rising energy costs.
The project also demonstrates how targeted financing and grant support can help smaller businesses overcome the upfront costs associated with renewable energy investments.
As Serbian companies increasingly seek to meet sustainability expectations in European markets, investments such as Tira’s solar project could help businesses reduce operating costs while supporting the country’s wider transition towards a low-carbon economy.
