The Polymer Industry Cluster (Polymer Industry Cluster) has opened applications for its latest research and development funding cycle aimed at accelerating polymer innovation and commercialization in Ohio.
The initiative is part of the Greater Akron Polymer Innovation Hub, supported by the Ohio Department of Development’s Innovation Hub program. The funding programme is designed to help startups, researchers, and companies move polymer technologies from concept to market through translational R&D support.
Eligible applicants include startups and businesses currently operating in Ohio or willing to establish operations in the state. The 2026 funding cycle prioritizes projects focused on advanced materials, manufacturing technologies, sustainability solutions, and supply chain resilience.
Key focus areas include next-generation materials and process technologies, circular and recyclable polymer solutions, AI-driven manufacturing and discovery systems, materials supporting healthcare applications, and energy storage and conversion technologies.
The funding programme is being offered alongside Bounce Innovation Hub’s Synthe6 Materials Accelerator, allowing startups to apply for both commercialization support and R&D grants through a combined application process. Selected applicants may receive grants of up to $500,000 to support research, development, and scaling activities.
The Polymer Industry Cluster expects to distribute at least $6 million in total grant funding across multiple funding cycles spanning 2025 and 2026, backed by an additional $2 million in local matching funds.
Officials said the initiative aims to strengthen Ohio’s position as a leading center for polymer innovation and advanced manufacturing. Previous funding rounds supported projects involving sustainable packaging, advanced healthcare materials, plastics recycling, and bio-based polymer technologies.
Applications will be evaluated based on scientific merit, market potential, implementation strategy, collaboration strength, and alignment with the organization’s innovation priorities. The review process will also consider partnerships with academic institutions and industry members, as well as the availability of matching funding support.
The funding programme reflects growing investment in sustainable materials, advanced manufacturing, and polymer research as industries increasingly seek scalable solutions for energy, healthcare, and environmental challenges.
