The Linux Foundation has announced plans to launch the Open Health Stack Software Foundation (OHS-SF), a new open source initiative designed to accelerate the development of AI-enabled digital health solutions and improve access to interoperable healthcare systems worldwide.
The foundation will provide a vendor-neutral, community-led platform for developers, healthcare organizations, and technology partners to collaborate on open source tools that support the future of digital health. The initiative aims to address fragmented health infrastructure and help reduce healthcare access gaps, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
As part of the launch, Google will contribute the Open Health Stack project, including its code and related assets, to the new foundation. Google.org will also provide a $3 million grant to support the foundation’s growth and long-term development.
Digital health systems often face challenges due to limited interoperability between platforms, making it difficult for healthcare providers to exchange information and adopt emerging technologies. The Open Health Stack Software Foundation aims to solve these issues by offering standards-based tools that enable developers to build secure, scalable, and AI-ready health applications.
The foundation will focus on three major technical areas. These include supporting HL7 FHIR-based health data standards, developing the Open Health Stack Player as a reference toolkit for local digital health deployments, and advancing AI Commons, a collaborative space for safe and transparent artificial intelligence applications in global healthcare.
The AI Commons initiative is being developed with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and will focus on enabling responsible AI solutions that can be adapted for different healthcare environments.
Originally launched in 2023 with Google, the Open Health Stack project has grown into a global ecosystem of developers and healthcare implementers. By moving the project into a broader open governance model, the Linux Foundation aims to encourage wider collaboration and innovation across the health technology sector.
Linux Foundation CEO Jim Zemlin said the initiative will bring together developers, health organizations, and implementation partners under a neutral governance structure, ensuring that digital health tools are developed openly and remain accessible to communities worldwide.
With support from technology companies, healthcare organizations, nonprofit groups, and research institutions, the Open Health Stack Software Foundation represents a step toward building more connected, inclusive, and AI-powered healthcare systems.
