Kyrgyzstan Digitalizes Health Records to Improve Maternal Healthcare

Dated: July 9, 2026

Kyrgyzstan is transforming maternal healthcare through the introduction of Electronic Health Records (EHR), replacing traditional paper-based systems with digital tools designed to improve patient care, efficiency and access to medical information.

The transition to digital health records has changed how healthcare workers monitor pregnancies, manage appointments and maintain medical histories. Family doctors in cities such as Osh are now using electronic systems to register pregnant women, track their health status and provide more coordinated prenatal care.

For many healthcare professionals, the shift from paper to digital systems required significant adaptation. Doctors and nurses who had spent decades working with handwritten records faced challenges learning new technologies, managing technical issues and adjusting to a different way of delivering care. However, training and continued experience have helped medical workers overcome these barriers.

The benefits of digital records are becoming increasingly visible, particularly in maternal health. Electronic systems support early pregnancy registration, which is essential for identifying health risks and ensuring timely medical follow-up. Doctors can now create digital records immediately, schedule appointments online and provide patients with faster access to test results and recommendations.

For expectant mothers, electronic health records have made healthcare visits more convenient. Instead of waiting for long periods at hospitals, patients can schedule appointments remotely and arrive at their designated times. Medical staff can also prepare in advance by reviewing patient information before consultations.

Digital records have also improved the security and reliability of medical information. Previously, paper documents and test results could be misplaced, creating additional stress for patients and healthcare providers. With electronic systems, medical histories, prescriptions and recommendations are stored securely and can be accessed when needed.

A key factor behind the successful adoption of the system has been investment in healthcare worker training. A two-day training programme in Osh helped family doctors strengthen their skills, address technical challenges and improve their understanding of digital health tools.

The electronic health record system is part of a broader effort to bridge the digital divide in healthcare and improve public services. By combining technology with professional training and patient-focused solutions, Kyrgyzstan is demonstrating how digital transformation can strengthen healthcare delivery.

As the country continues expanding digital health solutions, electronic records are expected to play an increasingly important role in improving maternal care, reducing administrative burdens and creating stronger connections between patients and healthcare providers.
