Egypt is strengthening its partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (United Nations Development Programme) to accelerate green industrial development, renewable energy adoption, and sustainable manufacturing initiatives across the country.
The discussions took place between Egypt’s Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem and UNDP Resident Representative in Egypt Chitose Noguchi, alongside senior ministry officials. The meeting focused on expanding collaboration in renewable energy, digital transformation, SME financing, and industrial sustainability projects.
A key topic was Egypt’s “Sun of Industry” initiative, which aims to install solar power plants with a combined capacity of 1,000 megawatts across factories within the next two years. The programme is intended to improve energy resilience in the industrial sector while reducing dependence on conventional power sources.
Officials said the initiative will also support the preparation of industrial and energy mapping systems to help manage pressure on the national electricity grid and encourage wider adoption of solar energy solutions within manufacturing operations.
The cooperation framework between Egypt and the UNDP includes capacity building for solar power installation, transfer of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and automation, and efforts to improve industrial product quality and competitiveness.
The Egyptian government believes these initiatives will help local manufacturers meet international environmental standards, including compliance with the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), while also supporting export growth.
UNDP representatives praised Egypt’s renewable energy strategy and confirmed plans to deepen collaboration through the SETI programme, which aims to attract private investment into solar projects with an additional 200 MW of planned capacity.
The partnership reflects Egypt’s broader push toward green industrial transformation and sustainable energy development as the country seeks to position itself as a regional hub for clean energy and environmentally responsible manufacturing.
