The Rockefeller Foundation and Temasek Trust have announced the launch of the Global Coalition for Nuclear Philanthropy (GCNP), a new international initiative designed to mobilize philanthropic funding in support of nuclear energy as part of the global clean energy transition. The coalition was unveiled during the Philanthropy Asia Summit held in Singapore as part of Ecosperity Week 2026. The initiative seeks to strengthen support for nuclear energy as a solution for energy security, economic development, climate resilience, and long-term human progress.
The coalition was formed in response to rising global electricity demand and increasing pressure on countries to transition toward low-carbon energy systems. Organizers noted that rapid industrial growth, climate-related energy challenges, and growing consumption needs are intensifying the demand for reliable and sustainable energy sources. The initiative highlights nuclear power as an important complement to renewable energy systems because of its ability to provide stable, non-emitting baseload electricity.
According to the coalition’s founders, philanthropic investment in nuclear energy has historically remained extremely limited despite growing international interest in the sector. Analysis referenced during the launch showed that only a very small share of climate philanthropy currently supports nuclear-related initiatives. The coalition aims to address this gap by encouraging greater philanthropic participation in areas such as policy development, public engagement, financing models, workforce development, and governance systems connected to nuclear energy deployment.
The initiative also aligns with broader international climate commitments, including the COP28 declaration supported by more than 30 countries to triple global nuclear energy capacity by 2050 in pursuit of net-zero emissions goals. Coalition members include several philanthropic organizations and supporters focused on climate, innovation, and energy development, while the Oppenheimer Project will serve as a strategic partner supporting the coalition’s implementation and advisory efforts.
Leaders from both organizations emphasized that future nuclear development must prioritize safety, security, responsible waste management, and effective governance. The coalition intends to support informed public dialogue and evidence-based approaches to nuclear expansion while helping countries explore how nuclear energy can be integrated into their broader energy strategies. Particular attention will be given to emerging economies that may require stable energy supplies to support industrialization and economic growth.
The Global Coalition for Nuclear Philanthropy will also function as a collaborative platform for philanthropic institutions, experts, policymakers, researchers, and civil society stakeholders to share knowledge and coordinate investments. The initiative reflects a growing trend of philanthropic engagement in large-scale energy transition efforts as governments and private sector actors seek additional support to address climate change, rising energy demand, and sustainable development challenges worldwide.
