The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially opened applications for the head coach positions of the Super Eagles, Flying Eagles (U20), and Golden Eaglets (U17) national teams. This move confirms the departure of Jose Peseiro from the Super Eagles and signals a new chapter for Nigerian football coaching.
NFF Seeks New Super Eagles Coach
The NFF has initiated the search for a new head coach for the Super Eagles, following the expiration of Jose Peseiro’s contract last month. Despite Peseiro surpassing his AFCON semifinal target, negotiations for a new deal reportedly broke down over salary disagreements. The new coach will face immediate challenges, including leading the team in the upcoming FIFA friendly window and crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin in June. Nigeria currently sits third in their World Cup qualifying group with two points from two matches.
Flying Eagles and Golden Eaglets Also Seeking New Leadership
In addition to the Super Eagles, the NFF is also inviting applications for the head coach roles of the Flying Eagles (U20) and Golden Eaglets (U17) national teams.
- Flying Eagles (U20): The position was previously held by Ladan Bosso, who led the team to the Africa Games and the quarter-finals of the FIFA U20 World Cup last year. Candidates for this role must possess:
- Golden Eaglets (U17): Nduka Ugbade was the last coach for the Golden Eaglets, leading them to the U17 AFCON in Algeria where they exited in the quarter-finals.
Application Requirements and Deadline
The NFF has specified that candidates for all vacant coaching positions must possess relevant qualifications and experience, along with a strong understanding of African football. Applications for these prestigious roles must be submitted by March 12, 2024.
