Cambridge-based biotechnology company TRIMTECH Therapeutics has successfully expanded its seed funding round to €41 million, securing an additional €12 million to accelerate the development of innovative treatments for neurodegenerative and inflammatory diseases. The latest investment was led by Johnson & Johnson Innovation – JJDC and BGF, which joined existing investors to support the company’s next stage of growth.
Founded in 2023, TRIMTECH is focused on developing small-molecule protein degraders, a new class of therapeutics designed to selectively remove harmful proteins associated with diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. These diseases are often linked to the accumulation of abnormal protein aggregates in the brain, which disrupt normal cellular functions and contribute to disease progression.
The company’s technology is built on decades of scientific research into TRIM21, an E3 ligase that helps cells identify and eliminate unwanted proteins. Using proprietary platforms known as TRIMTAC and TRIMGLUE, TRIMTECH aims to target and degrade disease-causing protein aggregates while preserving healthy protein functions. This selective approach has the potential to offer safer and more effective treatments compared to existing therapeutic strategies.
The newly raised capital will be used to advance the company’s technology platforms, expand its drug development pipeline, and accelerate research into central nervous system (CNS)-penetrant therapies capable of reaching the brain. These efforts are intended to address significant unmet medical needs in neurological diseases, where effective treatment options remain limited.
The funding extension reflects growing investor interest in next-generation biotechnology platforms focused on protein degradation, targeted drug discovery, and neurodegenerative disease research. Across Europe, biotechnology companies developing innovative approaches for Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and other CNS disorders have attracted substantial investment during 2026, highlighting the sector’s strong growth potential.
TRIMTECH was founded by leading scientists including Leo James from the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology and Will McEwan from the UK Dementia Research Institute at the University of Cambridge. The company was established with support from Cambridge Innovation Capital, SV Health Investors’ Dementia Discovery Fund, and biotechnology entrepreneur Damian Crowther.
According to the company, its technology could pave the way for new treatments for diseases affecting millions of people worldwide. Alzheimer’s disease alone impacts more than 55 million people globally, creating an urgent need for therapies that can address the underlying causes of neurodegeneration rather than simply managing symptoms.
As part of the expanded financing round, representatives from JJDC and BGF will join TRIMTECH’s board as non-executive directors, strengthening the company’s leadership and strategic capabilities. The investment positions TRIMTECH to advance its innovative therapeutic platforms and move closer to delivering potential breakthrough treatments for patients living with neurodegenerative diseases.
