India’s Research and Academic Landscape Flourishes with New Calls for Applications and Proposals

Dated: June 3, 2025

India‘s academic and research landscape is buzzing with numerous opportunities as various institutions and international collaborations announce calls for applications and proposals. These initiatives span a wide array of fields, from heritage science and biomedical research to urban studies and international R&D projects, inviting scholars, researchers, and professionals to contribute to diverse areas of knowledge and development.

Diverse Research and Development Opportunities

Several prominent calls highlight a commitment to advancing research across critical sectors:

  • Science and Heritage Research Initiative (SHRI): The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, is seeking proposals to integrate modern science and technology with India’s ancient heritage. This includes research in ancient astronomy, mathematics, materials, metallurgy, traditional health practices, and digital preservation of heritage. The deadline for proposals is May 20, 2025.
  • Biomedical and Health Research: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has extended the deadline for its Start-Up Grant for Induction into Biomedical & Health Research to February 17, 2025. This grant aims to foster new research in vital health areas.
  • International R&D Collaborations: The 11th India-Spain Joint Call for R&D&I Projects 2024, facilitated by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), is open for applications, promoting bilateral innovation. Additionally, the Indo-Norwegian Cooperation Programme in Higher Education and Research (INCP2) and the ASEAN-India Research Training Fellowship are inviting applications, fostering global academic and research partnerships.

Academic and Professional Development

Beyond research, there are significant opportunities for career advancement and skill development:

  • Faculty Development Programs: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is inviting applications from institutions to host Faculty Development Programmes (FDP) focused on innovation and entrepreneurship, aiming to enhance teaching and research capabilities.
  • Women Researchers’ Advancement: The Government of India’s Biotechnology Career Advancement and Re-orientation (BioCARE) Programme for women researchers is open for 2024-25, supporting women in scientific careers.
  • Project Management and Development Roles: The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) is seeking a Project Manager for its Writing Urban India Collective Project and a Development Officer. These roles are crucial for managing research initiatives and fundraising efforts.

International Scholarship and Fellowship Programs

Global opportunities continue to attract Indian talent:

  • MEXT Scholarship (Japan): The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan is accepting applications for its 2026 Embassy Recommendation Scholarship for Research Students, offering a pathway to study in Japan.
  • Charles Wallace India Trust Visiting Fellowships: These fellowships provide opportunities for Indian professionals in arts, humanities, and heritage to undertake short-term visits to the UK.
  • Rhodes Scholarship (India): Applications are open for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship, enabling outstanding students to pursue postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford.

These diverse calls underscore a vibrant ecosystem of learning, research, and collaboration, both within India and internationally, providing numerous avenues for individuals to contribute to knowledge creation and societal progress.
