Amazonia’s vast biodiversity is creating new opportunities for sustainable economic growth, innovation and local entrepreneurship as governments, researchers and communities explore ways to build a stronger regional bioeconomy.
The Amazon region is often viewed primarily through the lens of environmental crisis. However, its biological wealth, cultural diversity and growing scientific capacity also provide a foundation for development models that can generate income while protecting and restoring ecosystems.
A science-based bioeconomy can combine scientific research, technological innovation and Indigenous and local knowledge to transform biological resources into higher-value products and businesses. Advances in processing crops such as cupuaçu, camu-camu, aguaje and aninga are already supporting new food, cosmetic and health-related products while strengthening local value chains.
These opportunities were discussed at the III Annual Meeting of the Bioamazonia Network, held in May 2026 in Leticia, Colombia. The five-day meeting brought together research institutions, governments and implementing organisations to explore how science, innovation and technology transfer can accelerate the development of Amazonia’s bioeconomy.
The Bioamazonia Network connects research institutions across the region with the goal of turning scientific knowledge into technologies, production processes and bio-based products that can reach local businesses and producer organisations. This approach seeks to move Amazonia away from simply exporting raw biological resources and towards greater local processing and value creation.
A successful bioeconomy depends on three interconnected priorities: sustainable use of biological resources, creation of greater value through knowledge and technology, and meaningful participation by Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
Indigenous and local communities possess extensive knowledge of biodiversity and ecosystem management. Their involvement is therefore essential to ensuring that bioeconomy development is environmentally sustainable, socially inclusive and economically beneficial.
Several initiatives highlighted at the Leticia meeting demonstrate how these principles can work in practice. In Puerto Nariño, value-added cacao processing is supporting sustainable production and benefiting more than 100 families from 11 Indigenous communities. Other initiatives are developing biodegradable packaging from local materials and supporting Indigenous entrepreneurs whose businesses are connected to sociobiodiversity and cultural identity.
The bioeconomy therefore extends beyond biotechnology. It can also create opportunities in agriculture, food processing, entrepreneurship, creative industries and culturally based businesses.
Scaling these opportunities, however, remains challenging. Biodiversity-based ventures often require lengthy research and development periods, making conventional financing difficult to access. Scientific and technological capabilities also remain uneven across Amazonian countries.
The Bioamazonia Network is working to address some of these gaps by connecting eight research institutes across five Amazonian countries and more than 1,000 researchers. The network has also expanded regional cooperation through the participation of institutions from Guyana and Suriname.
The initiative aligns with the Inter-American Development Bank’s Amazonia Forever programme, which promotes greater regional coordination and sustainable development across the Amazon. Cooperation between Amazonia Forever and the Coordinator of Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon Basin is also supporting efforts focused on ethical research, innovation and equitable benefit-sharing.
Science and innovation can contribute to broader environmental challenges as well, including ecosystem degradation, illicit economies and mercury contamination. Stronger research cooperation, compatible data and improved monitoring can help governments and communities develop more effective responses.
The future of Amazonia’s bioeconomy will depend on more than scientific discoveries. Sustained investment in research and innovation, effective technology transfer, inclusive governance and financing designed for biodiversity-based businesses will be essential.
By connecting science with local knowledge, entrepreneurship and responsible investment, Amazonia can develop economic opportunities that strengthen communities while increasing the value of standing forests and protecting the region’s extraordinary biodiversity.
