UNOPS and the Government of Denmark are continuing efforts to restore communities in Mykolaiv, southern Ukraine, following extensive damage caused by the ongoing war. The project focuses on rebuilding essential infrastructure while creating safer and more resilient neighbourhoods for residents.
As of August 2026, partial repairs are underway at nine additional residential buildings damaged by blast waves, bringing the total number of buildings covered by the project to 59.
Education infrastructure remains a major focus of the recovery programme. A new anti-radiation shelter at Kalynivka Lyceum was completed in May 2026, providing protection for up to 250 students and staff and supporting the return to in-person education.
Construction is also continuing on an anti-radiation shelter at Mykolaiv School No. 61. At the historic Arkas Lyceum, stabilization works have been completed, while façade restoration and interior construction of a new 700-square-metre underground safe space are progressing.
The restoration programme has delivered significant improvements to residential areas across Mykolaiv. Repairs to multi-apartment buildings are helping households return to safer and more comfortable homes.
In 2025, UNOPS completed restoration work on 19 residential buildings in the Zavodskyi district, benefiting around 400 households. Repairs to another 23 buildings in the Korabelnyi district benefited 671 households, while additional buildings were subsequently added to the programme.
The initiative also covers roads, recreational spaces, public facilities and other essential infrastructure. Community consultations are being used to identify local priorities and ensure reconstruction efforts respond to residents’ needs.
Mykolaiv suffered extensive wartime damage, with 1,389 damaged sites identified in an assessment by the European Union. The ongoing partnership between UNOPS, Denmark and Ukrainian authorities aims to address these impacts while strengthening the foundations for long-term community recovery.
Through infrastructure restoration, safer schools and community-focused reconstruction, the UNOPS-led programme is helping Mykolaiv move towards recovery. The initiative highlights how coordinated international support can restore essential services, improve living conditions and help communities build a safer and more resilient future.
