The International Labour Organization (ILO) has highlighted the story of Carolina Zamaida González, an educator from Colombia’s Coffee Region who is helping young people develop digital skills and pursue new opportunities through technology and training.
As a SENATIC instructor in the municipalities of Filandia, Quimbaya, and Calarcá, Carolina supports young people in strengthening their digital competencies, life skills, and preparation for the future workforce.
Through SENATIC, an initiative supported by Colombia’s Ministry of Information and Communications Technologies, SENA, and the ILO, students gain skills in areas such as programming, data analysis, and digital tools that can improve their education and employment prospects.
For Carolina, teaching goes beyond technical training. She focuses on helping students build confidence, stay motivated, and recognize their potential to achieve their goals.
Her own journey shaped her approach to education. Growing up in a hardworking family, she learned the value of discipline and persistence. While studying Systems Engineering at Antonio Nariño University, she balanced education with work responsibilities to support her studies and family.
Before becoming an instructor, Carolina developed experience in different professional fields, including judicial investigation. However, she found her strongest sense of purpose in education and supporting young people.
In her classrooms, she connects digital learning with real workplace experiences by encouraging students to take on roles similar to those found in professional environments. This approach helps learners understand teamwork, responsibility, and career possibilities.
Carolina has observed increasing interest among young people in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, programming, and data analytics. She believes the key challenge is helping students understand how technology can become a tool for entrepreneurship, learning, and personal development.
Many learners travel long distances from rural areas to participate in training, reinforcing her commitment to creating meaningful learning experiences.
The ILO says initiatives like SENATIC demonstrate the importance of investing in skills development to expand employment opportunities and prepare young people for a changing digital economy.
Carolina’s story shows how education, technology, and mentorship can work together to help young people overcome challenges and build stronger futures.
