United Nations General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock visited the DigiKen innovation hub at PC Kinyanjui Technical Training Institute in Nairobi, highlighting Kenya’s efforts to use digital technology to create opportunities for youth, women, persons with disabilities, and entrepreneurs.
The visit focused on the Digital Platforms Kenya (DigiKen) programme, an initiative supported by the UN Joint SDG Fund and implemented by several UN agencies to strengthen Kenya’s inclusive digital ecosystem. The programme promotes digital skills development, entrepreneurship, innovation, and digital literacy while supporting sustainable development goals.
At the center of the visit was the institution’s Digital Innovation Hub, where students and community members receive training in digital skills, entrepreneurship, and emerging technologies. The initiative aims to connect national digital transformation goals with practical opportunities at the community level.
During the visit, Baerbock met beneficiaries, trainers, innovators, and government officials who shared how digital tools are helping expand access to education, employment, and business opportunities. She emphasized the importance of ensuring that digital transformation benefits all members of society and highlighted the need for broader participation in shaping the future of artificial intelligence and digital governance.
Kenyan officials also showcased the country’s ongoing investments in digital infrastructure, connectivity, and innovation hubs designed to expand access to technology and digital services nationwide.
The DigiKen programme is currently supporting 15 digital innovation hubs across 12 counties and aims to reach thousands of young people and women through training in digital skills, entrepreneurship, media literacy, and sustainable artificial intelligence technologies.
In addition to community training, the programme is helping strengthen digital leadership within the public sector through specialized courses focused on artificial intelligence and digital transformation.
The visit underscored Kenya’s growing role in digital innovation and demonstrated how partnerships between governments, educational institutions, and international organizations can help create a more inclusive and digitally empowered future.
