Young people in Ilijaš are exploring their cultural and historical heritage through technology, creativity, and hands-on learning activities supported by the European Union through the ReLOaD3 programme.
The initiative aims to strengthen young people’s connection with their community by introducing them to local history, traditional knowledge, and cultural landmarks through interactive education.
One of the workshops focused on Bosančica, the traditional script of medieval Bosnia. More than 20 students from Stari Ilijaš Elementary School learned about the historic alphabet and practiced writing using guidance from educators.
The activities are part of the “Field Education on the Cultural and Historical Heritage of the Municipality of Ilijaš” project, organized by the Old Bosnian City of Dubrovnik Foundation. The project is supported through the Regional Programme for Local Democracy in the Western Balkans, funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The programme was created to address gaps in heritage education by giving students practical opportunities to learn about important cultural sites in their region. Ilijaš is home to significant landmarks, including the Old Town of Dubrovnik and the Kopošići Necropolis, both recognized as national monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Through field visits, creative workshops, environmental sessions, and virtual reality experiences, students explored the connection between cultural heritage, technology, and sustainability. The project also included discussions on climate change impacts on historic monuments and the importance of protecting heritage sites.
The initiative exceeded its original goal of involving 100 students, with around 200 young people taking part in activities. Organizers say the strong response shows growing interest among youth in learning about their history in new and engaging ways.
By combining modern tools with cultural education, the project is helping young people become future guardians of their community’s heritage while developing creativity, awareness, and a stronger sense of belonging.
