The outbreak has impacted several key areas in eastern DRC, including Mongbwalu, Bunia and Rwampara, where Red Cross volunteers are conducting door-to-door awareness campaigns to educate families about Ebola symptoms, prevention measures and the importance of seeking medical care early.
In response to the growing health emergency, the IFRC has activated its highest level of emergency response and deployed specialised public health teams and experts to affected regions. Emergency coordination mechanisms have also been established between teams in Kinshasa, Kampala, Nairobi and Geneva to strengthen regional preparedness and response efforts.
Red Cross volunteers are playing a critical role in supporting communities through health education and Safe and Dignified Burial services. These services help prevent further transmission of the virus while ensuring that families can honour loved ones in a respectful and culturally sensitive manner.
The IFRC has delivered essential supplies, including personal protective equipment and specialised burial kits, to frontline teams working in outbreak zones. Health officials say these resources are vital in limiting exposure risks and protecting both communities and responders.
Community trust remains a central element of the response. Volunteers, many of whom live in the affected areas, are helping to counter misinformation and address fears surrounding the disease.
