A new global professional organization, the International Development Economics Association (IDEA), has been launched to create a dedicated community for researchers and professionals working in development economics.
Founded in January 2026 by a group of 89 scholars from more than 40 countries, IDEA aims to connect development economists across regions and provide a platform for research collaboration, knowledge sharing, and professional growth.
The organization was created in response to the growing need for a global network that supports development economists in the same way other economic fields have established professional associations. IDEA seeks to bring together researchers, policymakers, and academics regardless of their location, career stage, or area of expertise.
The association is designed to be open and democratically governed, with geographic representation built into its structure. Its leadership includes members from six world regions, with a focus on supporting scholars and researchers from low- and middle-income countries.
IDEA plans to support the development economics community through activities such as working paper programs, conferences, mentorship opportunities, career development initiatives, and partnerships with existing organizations.
The new association will work alongside established institutions and conferences in the field rather than replace them. IDEA has already formed partnerships with organizations including the Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development to strengthen collaboration within development economics.
As global development challenges continue to evolve, IDEA aims to provide a shared space where economists can exchange ideas, present research, build networks, and contribute to the future of the field.
The association is inviting development economists and researchers worldwide to join its growing community and participate in shaping its future direction.
