The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is helping the city of Nukus modernize its public transportation system through a major investment focused on clean and sustainable mobility.
Under the project, the EBRD will provide a sovereign loan of up to US$37 million to support the acquisition of up to 112 electric buses, along with charging infrastructure and new depot facilities. The initiative is part of the EBRD Green Cities programme, which promotes environmentally sustainable urban development.
The project aims to improve public transport services in Nukus, the capital of the autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan and one of Uzbekistan’s largest cities. By introducing electric buses, the city expects to reduce air pollution, lower greenhouse gas emissions, ease traffic congestion, and provide residents with a cleaner and more efficient transportation network.
In addition to upgrading the bus fleet, the project will support the development of a Green City Action Plan. The plan will help the city address environmental challenges while advancing climate resilience, digital development, and inclusive economic growth.
The investment represents an important step toward expanding electric mobility in Uzbekistan and strengthening sustainable urban infrastructure. Improved public transport is expected to enhance mobility for residents while contributing to the country’s broader environmental and development goals.
The EBRD remains one of Uzbekistan’s key development partners, with nearly US$6.9 billion invested across more than 200 projects supporting economic modernization, private-sector growth, and sustainable infrastructure development.
