Port Hedland — June 4, 2026 — Mining giant BHP has announced a record $160 million investment in Port Hedland, Western Australia, marking its largest community infrastructure commitment in the state.
The centrepiece of the funding is an $80 million upgrade to Hedland Senior High School, which will deliver new design, technology, and science facilities, alongside modern classrooms and amenities. The redevelopment will replace obsolete buildings and create a contemporary learning environment for more than 1,200 students annually, with initial stages expected to be completed by early 2029.
The investment also includes $20 million for a new aquatic centre and $10 million for service worker accommodation, addressing critical community needs. The aquatic centre will replace ageing facilities and support youth engagement and health, while the accommodation project will deliver up to 56 apartment-style dwellings for essential service workers, easing housing shortages in South Hedland.
Premier Roger Cook praised BHP’s contribution, noting it aligns with the government’s Seven Cities vision to strengthen regional communities. Education Minister Sabine Winton highlighted the school upgrade as a significant boost for students, teachers, and families, while BHP Australia President Geraldine Slattery emphasized the importance of partnerships in building strong communities.
“This is BHP’s biggest community investment in Western Australia. It will help young people get a good education, build great local facilities and ensure more housing for the people who deliver vital services to the region,” Slattery said.
The projects are expected to deliver long-term social and economic benefits, supporting family retention, workforce development, and improved quality of life in Port Hedland, a key hub of WA’s resources sector.
