The Open Society Foundations (OSF), founded by billionaire philanthropist George Soros and now chaired by his son Alex Soros, has announced a new $300 million commitment aimed at strengthening democracy, civil rights, and economic security in the United States over the next five years. The initiative comes at a time when nonprofit organizations and advocacy groups are facing increasing political pressure and scrutiny in the country.
According to the foundation, the funding will support efforts focused on protecting democratic institutions, defending civil liberties, and promoting economic opportunities for vulnerable and working-class communities. The strategy also aims to back state-level policies that could be replicated nationally to improve social protections and address inequality.
OSF has already allocated an initial $20 million from the broader commitment for organizations involved in strategic litigation, nonprofit sector defense, anti-corruption work, and monitoring threats to the rule of law. The foundation says these efforts are intended to strengthen democratic resilience and ensure legal protections remain accessible during periods of political and institutional tension.
The announcement marks one of the first major US-focused initiatives introduced under Alex Soros’ leadership after taking over the organization’s direction from his father. In recent years, the foundation has undergone restructuring and operational changes while continuing its global work on human rights, justice, and democratic governance.
Open Society Foundations remains one of the world’s largest philanthropic networks, operating across multiple countries and funding civil society organizations, research initiatives, and advocacy programs. The latest investment reflects a growing trend among major philanthropic organizations to increase support for democratic participation, social equity, and institutional protections in response to rising political polarization and global democratic challenges.
