The document pays tribute to four remarkable women recognized as the “Mothers of Africa” by Bread and Water for Africa® in honor of Mother’s Day. Each has dedicated her life to caring for orphaned and vulnerable children, creating safe havens and opportunities for thousands across sub‑Saharan Africa.
Phyllis Keino of Kenya is celebrated as the founder of Lewa Children’s Home, Kipkeino Primary School, and Baraka Farm. Since the late 1980s, she has provided a home and education for hundreds of children, while serving as an international spokesperson for Bread and Water for Africa®. Her lifelong commitment has earned her numerous humanitarian awards, and she draws inspiration from her own childhood experiences of poverty and community support.
Angela Miyanda of Zambia, a former Second Lady, established Kabwata Orphanage in response to the HIV/AIDS crisis. Since 1998, the orphanage has cared for more than 560 children, many orphaned by AIDS. Angela’s compassion and leadership have been widely recognized, and she emphasizes that the success of Kabwata is the result of collective effort and faith.
In Zimbabwe, Margaret Makambira founded the Shinga Development Trust and Lerato Children’s Home to provide safety, education, and livelihood training for orphans. Her work has supported hundreds of children directly and through outreach programs. Stories of transformation, such as helping children overcome trauma and gain access to education, highlight her impact. She has also contributed to improving water and sanitation in rural communities.
Rosemary Kirutu of Tanzania co‑founded Watoto Wa Africa Orphanage in 2000, where she oversees the care of around 100 children. With her husband Josephat, she has built a faith‑centered environment that nurtures children’s growth and development. Her leadership ensures that every child receives love, education, and guidance, embodying the values of compassion and resilience.
Together, Phyllis, Angela, Margaret, and Rosemary have become mothers to thousands of children, guiding them into adulthood with love, faith, and perseverance. Their work exemplifies the mission of Bread and Water for Africa®, made possible through the generosity of its supporters.
