At the Kabwata Orphanage in Lusaka, Zambia, 106 orphaned and abandoned children and youth have found a safe and nurturing home. With grant support from Bread and Water for Africa®, the orphanage provides holistic care, including shelter, nutritious meals, medical services, education, and psychosocial support. The program is designed not only to stabilize immediate needs but also to equip children with skills and opportunities for long-term independence.
Administrator Simambo Miyanda noted that the grant has been vital in sustaining operations amid rising costs, electricity shortages, and broader economic pressures. Thanks to this support, the orphanage has been able to consistently meet core needs such as food, healthcare, and supervision, while ensuring uninterrupted access to education.
The impact of this support is evident in the lives of children like Beatrice Mwiinga, who arrived at Kabwata in 2021 after years of abuse. With the orphanage’s help, she re-entered school, passed her national exams, and progressed through secondary education. Her story reflects the transformative effect of consistent care and educational support.
Academic success has been a highlight, with all six children who sat for Grade 7 and Grade 9 national exams passing and advancing to the next level. This achievement underscores the effectiveness of the orphanage’s education programs in overcoming earlier disruptions in the children’s schooling.
Simambo emphasized that the generosity of Bread and Water for Africa® supporters goes far beyond funding—it has brought visible and lasting improvements in the lives of vulnerable children. By providing stability in an environment where uncertainty is common, the program has given these children not just care, but hope and the foundation for a brighter future.
