Tanzania has taken a significant step toward modernizing its education system for the digital age. With support from UNESCO and funding from the Republic of Korea through the KFIT III Project, the country has strengthened the digital teaching capacity of ICT trainers nationwide. A Training of Trainers program held in Dar es Salaam in April 2026 equipped 139 educators from 60 institutions across 20 regions with practical skills to integrate ICT into teaching and learning. These trainers will now cascade their knowledge to teachers across the country, expanding the reach of digital pedagogy.
The training focused on implementing Tanzania’s 2025 ICT Competency Standard for Teachers through the Tanzania Institute of Education’s Teachers Continuous Professional Development Learning Management System (MEWAKA). Fifteen online ICT modules developed with UNESCO support are now available to help teachers apply digital tools in pedagogy, curriculum delivery, assessment, and classroom management.
Officials emphasized the transformative potential of the MEWAKA platform. The Director of ICT at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology highlighted its role in building teachers’ confidence and skills, while TIE’s coordinator stressed the importance of trainers providing real-time technical support and sharing evidence during implementation. Participants praised the program for boosting their competence and creating pathways to share skills with colleagues.
The initiative also established a national network of trainers to accelerate ICT adoption in classrooms, improve teachers’ digital competencies, and enhance the quality of teaching and learning. By aligning digital materials with the Tanzanian curriculum, the program ensures relevance and sustainability.
As part of Tanzania’s broader education reform agenda, this effort demonstrates how international cooperation, national leadership, and targeted teacher development can collectively build a more inclusive and future-ready education system. Through KFIT III, UNESCO and its partners are laying the foundation for a digitally empowered generation of teachers and learners.
