As Laos moves closer to graduating from Least Developed Country (LDC) status and integrates more deeply into regional and global value chains, the adoption of responsible business conduct (RBC) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices has become increasingly vital. For Lao enterprises, promoting sustainable business practices is not only a matter of meeting international expectations but also a strategy to enhance competitiveness, gain access to finance and export markets, and ensure long-term business sustainability. By adhering to improved labour standards, using natural resources responsibly, maintaining transparent governance, and respecting communities, businesses can reduce risks, attract responsible investment, and strengthen their reputation.
To support this transition, the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LNCCI), in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO), organized a two-day workshop from 27–28 August 2025 to train a pool of ESG master trainers. These trainers are expected to lead follow-up sessions in Vientiane, Luang Prabang, and Savannakhet, ensuring wider outreach and long-term sustainability of the initiative. LNCCI Vice-President Vanthong Sithikoun emphasized the importance of building a knowledgeable cadre of trainers to benefit the broader business community and foster shared responsibility across enterprises.
The workshop focused on strengthening participants’ understanding of responsible business conduct, human rights due diligence, and the labour dimensions of ESG. It introduced localized materials, practical case studies, and delivery tools to help trainers lead effective sessions for Lao enterprises. ILO Senior Specialist Gary Rynhart highlighted that integrating ESG and RBC principles enables businesses to build competitiveness while contributing positively to society and the environment, creating a foundation for responsible and sustainable growth as Laos progresses toward LDC graduation.
