Human Rights Groups Urge UN Action on Tunisia Crisis

Dated: August 27, 2026

Human Rights Watch and other non-governmental organizations are calling on UN Human Rights Council members to address Tunisia’s deteriorating human rights situation during the Council’s 63rd session, scheduled for September 7 to October 9, 2026.

The organizations have raised concerns about the erosion of judicial independence, restrictions on freedom of expression and growing pressure on civil society. They argue that measures introduced since 2021 have weakened checks and balances and increased executive control over the judiciary.

The groups also point to the use of cybercrime legislation to prosecute journalists, lawyers, activists and political figures for their speech. Civil society organizations working with migrants and refugees have faced arrests, investigations, financial restrictions and other measures that have limited their ability to operate.

Transitional justice remains another major concern. The organizations say Tunisia’s post-2011 accountability process has stalled, while recent legal action against former Truth and Dignity Commission President Sihem Bensedrine has further undermined efforts to address past human rights violations.

The statement also highlights concerns over Tunisia’s 2024 presidential election, including the disqualification of candidates and restrictions on independent election monitoring. The groups argue that these developments have weakened political competition and the integrity of the electoral process.

Human rights organizations are additionally calling attention to the treatment of refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants from sub-Saharan Africa. They report forced expulsions, allegations of abuses by security forces and restrictions on access to asylum procedures.

Ahead of the Human Rights Council session, the organizations are urging member and observer states to publicly raise concerns about Tunisia, support Tunisian civil society and legal professionals, and use diplomatic channels to encourage respect for human rights, judicial independence and the rule of law.

They are also calling for greater cooperation between Tunisia and UN human rights mechanisms, saying sustained international monitoring and engagement are urgently needed.
