The Citi Foundation has released a new report highlighting the impact of its Global Innovation Challenge, a funding initiative designed to support innovative solutions addressing major social and economic challenges around the world.
Launched in 2023, the Global Innovation Challenge committed $25 million in funding to 50 organizations working to improve food security. The initiative aimed to help community organizations test, expand, and scale creative approaches to increasing access to affordable and nutritious food.
Over the two-year program period, participating organizations collectively reached more than 30 million people through projects focused on improving agricultural practices, reducing food waste, supporting local food systems, and building economic opportunities.
The funded projects included initiatives helping farmers adopt new technologies, supporting communities in developing sustainable food production methods, and creating programs that transform surplus food into meals for people in need.
The Citi Foundation designed the challenge as a model of catalytic funding, providing organizations with resources to take risks and develop solutions that can create long-term community impact. Beyond financial support, participants also received access to learning opportunities, expert guidance, global connections, and volunteer support.
The foundation emphasized that addressing food insecurity requires more than funding alone. By connecting organizations, sharing knowledge, and creating collaboration opportunities, the program helped strengthen local solutions and improve resilience in communities worldwide.
Following the success of the first cohort, the Global Innovation Challenge has expanded to address other critical issues. Future editions have focused on challenges including homelessness and youth employability, continuing the foundation’s goal of supporting innovative approaches to social and economic development.
The Citi Foundation says the ongoing evolution of the initiative reflects the importance of investing in ideas that can create lasting change and improve opportunities for communities around the world.
