Maryland Governor Wes Moore has announced a major expansion of the funding database within the Maryland Community Business Compass, significantly increasing access to financial resources for entrepreneurs and small business owners across the state.
The enhanced platform now provides access to nearly 2,500 funding and support programs, representing a tenfold increase from the approximately 250 state and local programs available when the Compass launched. The expanded database includes grants, loans, training opportunities, tax credits, rebates, and technical assistance programs, making it one of the most comprehensive business resource directories in Maryland.
Governor Moore said the initiative is designed to remove barriers that often prevent entrepreneurs from discovering available resources. By consolidating thousands of funding opportunities into a single platform, the state aims to improve access to capital, encourage business growth, and create new economic opportunities in communities across Maryland.
Developed by the Maryland State Innovation Team within the Office of the Governor, the Maryland Community Business Compass helps entrepreneurs identify local business opportunities, connect with expert guidance, and locate funding sources. The platform initially focused on supporting essential-service businesses such as childcare providers and fresh food retailers.
A key feature of the expansion is the integration of artificial intelligence technology developed in partnership with Anthropic. The platform uses Claude AI to analyze more than 72,000 web pages, identifying relevant assistance programs and summarizing complex eligibility requirements, deadlines, and contact information in clear, accessible language. All results undergo manual review before being published.
State officials highlighted the project as an example of how innovative technology can improve economic mobility and make government services more accessible. The expanded database now includes information from more than 100 public and private sources, including local governments, foundations, community development financial institutions, and universities.
The announcement aligns with Maryland’s broader strategy to promote responsible AI adoption while strengthening support for entrepreneurs and small businesses. It also builds on recent initiatives aimed at improving economic competitiveness, expanding access to capital, and supporting minority-owned and community-based businesses throughout the state.
