Germany’s Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety has officially joined the Global Alliance for Responsible and Green Minerals, a major international initiative led by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The membership agreement was signed in Vienna by German Environment Minister Carsten Schneider in the presence of UNIDO Director General Gerd Müller and representatives of the Alliance.
Germany’s participation strengthens international efforts to promote responsible, sustainable, and inclusive mineral value chains. The move follows the earlier accession of Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, making it the second major German ministry to join the Alliance and reinforcing the country’s commitment to sustainable resource management.
The Global Alliance for Responsible and Green Minerals brings together governments, industry stakeholders, and development partners to improve mineral supply chains from extraction and processing to recycling. Its objectives include promoting fair benefit sharing, supporting local value creation, creating employment opportunities, enhancing transparency and human rights protections, and minimizing environmental and climate impacts associated with mining activities.
Through this new partnership, special attention will be given to protecting rainforests and biodiversity from the negative effects of mineral extraction. The collaboration will also focus on encouraging the use of renewable energy throughout mineral supply chains, helping to reduce carbon emissions while supporting the global transition to cleaner and more sustainable industries.
The partnership reflects growing international recognition of the need for responsible sourcing of minerals that are critical for clean energy technologies and industrial development. By supporting environmentally responsible mining practices and sustainable value chains, the initiative aims to balance economic development with environmental protection and social inclusion.
Germany’s accession is expected to strengthen the Alliance’s capacity to advance global standards for sustainable mineral production, support climate and biodiversity goals, and promote long-term economic opportunities in mineral-producing regions around the world.
