United Nations officials have urged stronger international action to support peace efforts and prevent worsening hunger in Yemen. During a briefing to the UN Security Council, officials warned that continued conflict, funding shortages and humanitarian challenges are putting millions of lives at risk.
UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg said that although the 2022 truce between Houthi forces and the government continues to hold, the conflict remains unresolved. He warned that prolonged uncertainty is increasing instability and placing additional pressure on Yemeni communities.
The envoy highlighted that ongoing divisions and militarisation are affecting daily life, with economic hardship forcing some young people, including students and teachers, to join armed groups for survival. He called on all parties to use the current period of regional calm to restart a political process aimed at achieving lasting peace.
The humanitarian situation remains a major concern. UN relief chief Tom Fletcher warned that hunger is increasing as international aid declines. Millions of people in Yemen are facing severe food insecurity, while children remain among the most vulnerable groups.
According to UN assessments, millions of people require urgent humanitarian assistance, including children suffering from acute malnutrition. Aid agencies have warned that reduced funding is limiting their ability to provide essential support such as food, healthcare and protection services.
The UN has also renewed calls for the release of 73 detained UN personnel held by Houthi authorities. Officials said the detentions are restricting humanitarian operations and increasing suffering for affected families.
The UN requested three key actions from the Security Council: securing the release of detained personnel, increasing funding for humanitarian operations and supporting efforts toward a political solution.
Officials stressed that humanitarian assistance can help save lives, but only a sustainable peace agreement can address the deeper causes of Yemen’s crisis. The UN continues to call for international cooperation to support stability, recovery and a better future for the Yemeni people.
