India has expanded its digital public infrastructure by integrating electricity bills into the national DigiLocker platform, allowing consumers across 35 states and union territories to access their utility documents online in a secure and centralized system.
The initiative, led by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, brings 68 electricity distribution companies onto DigiLocker, enabling millions of users to view, download, and store their electricity bills digitally. The move is designed to reduce dependence on paper records, simplify document management, and improve access to essential utility information.
With this integration, electricity consumers no longer need to rely on physical copies, email searches, or visits to utility offices to retrieve billing documents. Instead, authenticated digital versions of electricity bills can be accessed anytime through the DigiLocker mobile application, which is part of India’s broader Digital India programme.
The participating utilities include a mix of state-run and private distribution companies serving large populations across the country. These organisations now issue and store bills through a verified digital channel, improving both security and efficiency in document delivery.
Officials say the expansion strengthens India’s digital public infrastructure by making government and service-provider documents more accessible and interoperable. DigiLocker already supports multiple services, including identity verification and official document storage, and continues to expand its ecosystem of trusted issuers.
The integration of electricity bills into DigiLocker is also expected to streamline administrative processes for utilities while improving customer convenience. By digitising routine documents, the system reduces paperwork, lowers operational costs, and enhances transparency in service delivery.
As India continues to expand digital governance initiatives, the rollout of electricity bill access through DigiLocker marks another step toward a fully digitised public service ecosystem aimed at improving efficiency, accessibility, and user experience for citizens nationwide.
