The Detroit Parks Coalition has launched its 2026 summer programming, bringing free activities, health initiatives, and community events to 50 parks across the city, supported by more than $1 million in combined funding for programming, park improvements, and stewardship.
The initiative is designed to turn neighbourhood parks into accessible hubs for recreation, wellness, arts, and social connection throughout the summer. Activities include yoga sessions, walking groups, sports clinics, arts programming, and family-friendly events spread across parks in communities throughout Detroit.
Signature programmes such as “Yoga in the Parks” and “We Walk Detroit” will run across multiple locations, offering free, inclusive opportunities for residents of all ages and abilities. Another initiative, the Pistons Neighbors Program, will activate 14 parks with drop-in sports, music, dance, and arts activities, culminating in citywide basketball and tennis tournaments.
Funding for the initiative comes from a mix of philanthropic and public partners, including The Kresge Foundation, the Detroit Parks Coalition, the City of Detroit Parks & Recreation Division, the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation, and the Gilbert Family Foundation. Together, they are supporting programming, capital improvements, and local park stewardship efforts.
In addition to citywide events, more than $437,000 in regrants has been distributed to local organizations leading health, arts, civic engagement, fitness, and nutrition programming in their communities. Additional investments are supporting organizational capacity building and long-term park maintenance.
The effort also includes literacy and learning components, such as the installation of Free Little Libraries and Born Learning Trails in 13 parks, designed to promote early childhood learning and family engagement in outdoor spaces.
Organisers say the initiative reflects a broader view of parks as essential civic infrastructure that support physical and mental health, strengthen community ties, and improve quality of life. By combining programming with long-term stewardship and local leadership, the goal is to ensure parks remain active, welcoming spaces throughout the year.
Residents are encouraged to explore local parks, participate in free activities, and engage with community programming designed to make neighbourhood spaces more vibrant, inclusive, and accessible.
