New York — June 1, 2026 — The United Nations has warned of the growing risks of escalation in the war in Ukraine, following a drone strike that entered Romanian airspace and injured two civilians in Galaţi. The incident prompted Romania to call an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council, underscoring fears of spillover into neighboring countries.
Addressing the Council, Kayoko Gotoh, Director for Europe, Central Asia, and the Americas, described the incident as part of a “worrying trend” of drone incursions into the airspaces of countries bordering Ukraine and Russia. She noted that the strike came amid a sharp escalation of missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities, alongside increased Ukrainian strikes on Russian infrastructure.
The UN also raised concerns about nuclear safety after a drone hit a turbine building at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant on May 30, marking the first such attack inside the plant’s perimeter in two years. Secretary‑General António Guterres has warned that the trajectory of intensification risks spiraling out of control.
Romania’s foreign minister stressed that escalation “must not become the new normal,” while Ukraine’s representative accused Russia of denial and distortion. Russia’s Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya rejected the accusations, calling for an “objective” investigation and claiming the incident was misrepresented.
The UN reiterated its support for dialogue aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace, emphasizing that restraint and responsibility are critical to preventing further destabilization.
