The Program in Journalism at Princeton University has awarded funding to 36 students for summer internships and independent reporting projects, expanding opportunities for hands-on training across local, national, and international media environments.
The initiative supports students in developing core journalism skills including reporting, audio storytelling, fact-checking, and longform nonfiction writing. Participants will work with established media outlets and cultural institutions while also pursuing original reporting projects under faculty supervision.
A key feature of this year’s program is its broad international reach, with internships spanning multiple countries and organizations. Students will contribute to media outlets and civil society institutions addressing topics such as governance, culture, environment, healthcare, and social justice. The program also includes placements with non-profit organizations in New Jersey and editorial roles at emerging publications focused on global reporting and print journalism.
The program leadership emphasized the importance of experiential learning in journalism education, highlighting how field-based reporting helps students build practical skills and professional awareness. Faculty members noted that student work contributes meaningfully to both local communities and broader global discussions.
Several new initiatives were introduced this year, including a pilot oral history reporting project based in Kenya, which connects students with research and community storytelling at an international research center. Additional internships include editorial work with new magazines, public radio outlets, and policy-focused organizations.
Independent project funding has also been awarded to undergraduate students pursuing longform journalism on topics ranging from migration and education to technology ecosystems and international communities. These projects aim to encourage in-depth storytelling and investigative reporting.
Through its International Internship Program, the initiative continues to support student placements across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas, reinforcing a global approach to journalism training and cross-cultural reporting experience.
