Yaoundé — May 28, 2026 — The Yaoundé City Council has announced plans to allocate CFA6.8 billion from its 2025 budget surplus to road and urban infrastructure projects in 2026. The decision was unanimously approved during the 26th session of the Yaoundé Urban Community Council, reflecting the city’s commitment to improving transport and urban services.
Mayor Luc Messi Atangana confirmed that the funds will accelerate rehabilitation of major roads, urban drainage works, and the development of new bypass routes. Authorities highlighted that road conditions remain one of the most pressing concerns among residents, with secondary roads often difficult to use and congestion affecting daily life.
The city administration pointed to recent investments in sanitation, street lighting, and road maintenance. In 2025 alone, CFA3.3 billion was spent on drainage and cleaning operations, while several roads and bridges were rehabilitated across different districts.
Improved budget performance also contributed to the surplus. The initial 2025 budget of CFA40.6 billion rose to more than CFA51 billion through special authorizations, enabling the city to redirect resources toward infrastructure upgrades.
The announcement underscores Yaoundé’s broader strategy to modernize its urban infrastructure, reduce congestion, and enhance living conditions for residents. By channeling surplus funds into road projects, the city aims to deliver tangible improvements in mobility and urban resilience.
