Chișinău — May 28, 2026 — More than 31,000 girls from 204 schools across the Republic of Moldova will benefit from free menstrual products during the 2026–2027 academic year, funded through the state budget. The initiative, part of the EduLIFE School Programme, aims to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive school environment for adolescent girls.
Launched in 2023 with support from the Ministry of Education and Research, UNFPA, and the Youth Media Center, the programme began with four pilot schools where dispensers were installed and life‑skills classrooms modernized. The pilot phase led to a fourfold reduction in menstruation‑related absenteeism, proving the initiative’s impact on girls’ education and well‑being.
Following its success, the programme expanded nationwide, with schools selected based on inclusion criteria such as participation in health education and refugee integration efforts. The initiative also promotes gender equality, health education, and respectful school environments.
According to Marcelina Baleca, Head of General Education Policies at the Ministry, free access to menstrual hygiene products is “an important step toward reducing absenteeism and combating stereotypes.” School leaders and students report improved confidence and openness, with boys showing greater understanding and support.
Observed annually on Menstrual Hygiene Day (May 28), the expansion of EduLIFE underscores Moldova’s commitment to health, dignity, and equality for all students. By ensuring access to menstrual products, the country continues to break stigma and foster a culture of respect and inclusion in education.
