May 27, 2026 — Melbourne — Schools across Victoria’s outer east can now apply for the 2026 capital works fund, a $25.4 million investment aimed at upgrading education infrastructure and keeping public schools modern and accessible. Applications opened on May 21, with funding streams available for small‑scale projects, student inclusion initiatives, and larger upgrades.
The fund supports practical improvements such as roof repairs, playground upgrades, bike shelters, and covered walkways. This year’s state budget has already allocated $10.6 million to 24 schools, including Toolangi Primary School, which received nearly $300,000 to refurbish its toilet block after two previously unsuccessful applications. With just 16 students enrolled, Principal Nicole Barnes emphasized the importance of government grants for small schools that cannot raise funds through community events.
Monbulk College secured $488,000 for a new all‑abilities bathroom, while Boronia K‑12 College received nearly $500,000 to resurface its gym courts, with completion expected by 2028. Deputy Premier and Education Minister Ben Carroll highlighted that both large and small schools benefit from these upgrades, which make a significant difference to students’ daily lives.
The inclusion stream of the fund focuses on accessibility, supporting projects such as inclusive playgrounds and facilities for students with disabilities. Since coming to office, Labor has delivered more than 2,400 school upgrades and built over half of all new schools across Australia in Victoria, reinforcing its commitment to modern, inclusive education
