Macau — May 27, 2026 — Caritas Macau has donated €20,000 to assist communities affected by the devastating winter storms that struck Portugal and Spain earlier this year. The funds, raised through a three‑month local campaign, will be split evenly between Caritas Portugal and Caritas Spain, reinforcing the organisation’s long‑standing humanitarian ties with the Iberian Peninsula.
Local Solidarity for Storm Victims
Secretary‑General Paul Pun Chi Meng said the donation represents a heartfelt gesture of solidarity from Macau residents. The storms — Kristin, Leonardo, and Marta — caused severe flooding, infrastructure damage, and 16 fatalities in Portugal, leaving hundreds injured and displaced. Despite the modest sum, organisers emphasised its symbolic importance in expressing compassion and unity across Lusophone communities.
Strengthening Bilateral Humanitarian Cooperation
During a recent visit to Portugal, Pun witnessed the extensive destruction and signed a renewed partnership agreement with Caritas Portugal. The updated pact expands cooperation on humanitarian aid, emergency response, and support for mobile populations. Under the agreement, Caritas Macau will assist Portuguese nationals in Macau, while Caritas Portugal will provide reciprocal help to Macau residents in Portugal.
A Legacy of Shared Commitment
Founded in 1951 during the Portuguese administration of Macau, Caritas Macau continues to uphold its mission of cross‑border solidarity and humanitarian outreach. The latest donation underscores the enduring connection between Macau and the Lusophone world, demonstrating how compassion transcends geography in times of crisis.
