A crowdfunding campaign led by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine and the City of Yokohama in Japan has successfully funded a new playground for Kindergarten No. 141 in Odesa. The initiative restored a safe outdoor play space for children after the facility was damaged in a 2023 missile strike that forced the kindergarten to close for more than two years.
The kindergarten had already reopened in September 2025 following UNDP-led restoration work supported by the Government of Japan. The new crowdfunding effort, running from August to September 2025, focused specifically on rebuilding the outdoor play area and mobilised 294 contributors, raising about JPY 3,365,000 (around US$22,000), exceeding its original target.
With the funds raised, 25 pieces of playground equipment including swings, carousels, and play structures have been installed. The upgraded space now provides children with a safer and more supportive environment for play, learning, and social development, which educators say is essential for early childhood growth.
Local officials in Odesa emphasized the importance of restoring normalcy for children amid ongoing conflict-related disruptions, while UNDP highlighted the campaign as an example of how global public participation can directly support recovery efforts. The Mayor of Yokohama also noted the project’s significance in strengthening long-standing cooperation between the two sister cities and demonstrating international solidarity with Ukraine.
