The European Union in Albania, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Environment, has launched a nationwide campaign titled “Protect Nature, while you still can,” aimed at mobilising schools, students, and communities to take active responsibility in protecting Albania’s biodiversity. The initiative delivers a clear message that environmental protection requires urgent and collective action, with every small effort contributing to a larger impact.
The launch event was held at Musine Kokalari School in Tirana and brought together EU Ambassador Silvio Gonzato, Minister of Education Mirela Kumbaro, and Minister of Environment Sofjan Jaupaj. Leaders emphasized the importance of environmental awareness, youth engagement, and alignment with European environmental standards as Albania advances toward EU integration.
Officials highlighted that protecting nature is a shared responsibility that begins with everyday actions such as recycling, reducing waste, saving energy, and tree planting. The campaign also places strong emphasis on environmental education, with schools playing a central role in shaping responsible behaviour among young people and fostering a culture of sustainability from an early age.
As part of the launch activities, students participated in interactive biodiversity quizzes, environmental workshops, and creative initiatives such as planting native species, installing bird and bee nesting boxes, and creating biodiversity-themed murals. Schools across Albania are also encouraged to organise similar activities, helping build a national movement for environmental awareness under the campaign slogan.
The EU-funded campaign will run from April to June 2026 and aims to strengthen awareness of biodiversity protection, promote environmentally responsible behaviour, and support Albania’s alignment with the European Green Agenda. Educational materials such as illustrated books, brochures on protected areas and Natura 2000, and resources on endemic species will be used alongside media outreach and community engagement to encourage youth participation.
Implemented under the EU4GreenGen project, the initiative also supports broader goals related to waste management, circular economy practices, and ecosystem protection. The campaign ultimately seeks to empower a new generation of environmental stewards who actively contribute to preserving Albania’s natural heritage.
