The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Coastal Management Program has awarded $970,770 in grants to support a range of coastal projects along Illinois’ Lake Michigan shoreline. The funding, delivered in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), will support initiatives focused on coastal education, habitat restoration, water quality monitoring, environmental planning, and shoreline resilience.
The grants will be implemented through eight projects spanning the entire Illinois Lake Michigan coastline. These initiatives will engage communities, schools, non-profit organisations, and park and forest preserve districts in efforts to improve coastal ecosystems while also promoting public awareness, stewardship, and recreational use of natural resources. The programme is designed to strengthen both environmental protection and community involvement in shoreline management.
IDNR leadership highlighted that the funding reflects a continued commitment to protecting and restoring the Lake Michigan shoreline for future generations. The 2026 grant round places strong emphasis on nature-based solutions such as green infrastructure, environmental workforce development, and improved access to recreational and cultural coastal resources.
Among the funded projects are initiatives led by organisations such as the American Indian Center, Chicago Park District, Current Innovation Inc., Friends of the Forest Preserves, Lake County Forest Preserve District, Lake Forest Open Lands Association, Navy Pier, and OAI Inc. These projects range from environmental education and conservation career pathways to infrastructure resilience planning and green infrastructure maintenance.
The Coastal Management Program aims to enhance the environmental, economic, and social value of Illinois’ Lake Michigan coast by supporting healthy ecosystems and resilient communities. It also works to improve coordination among agencies and local partners while encouraging sustainable and balanced use of coastal resources.
Overall, the programme continues to serve as a key mechanism for channeling federal and state resources into local coastal protection efforts, ensuring long-term sustainability and community engagement across Illinois’ shoreline regions.
