The Journalismfund Europe is currently accepting applications for the European Local Cross-border Grants program. This initiative aims to support local independent journalism by providing grants to investigative journalistic projects in Europe and encouraging cross-border collaboration.
The program’s objectives include stimulating local journalists and news outlets to engage in investigative journalism and learn from their counterparts in other countries. By fostering a European network of local journalists, the program aims to enhance the reach and impact of local investigative reporting. Additionally, it encourages journalists to compare issues faced by different regions and cities in Europe, ultimately addressing common challenges through collaborative efforts.
In 2024, the total grant budget is €475,000, allocated over four application rounds. The grants can cover costs related to journalists’ working time for investigations, as well as direct expenses such as travel, accommodation, translation, and legal screening. However, certain expenses like overhead, production costs, and non-research-related items are not covered by the grants.
Eligibility criteria for applicants include the requirement for investigative teams to comprise at least two journalists or media outlets from different countries. Proposals must focus on local cross-border investigative journalism and result in publications by at least two professional media outlets in separate European countries. The assessment criteria for applications include factors such as the project’s added value, relevance, quality of research, feasibility, team structure, and cross-border aspects.
Applications are reviewed by an independent jury of investigative journalism experts, who evaluate each proposal based on the set criteria. Diversity in terms of region, topics, team composition, and publication forms is considered during the selection process. Both the jury and Journalismfund Europe prioritize confidentiality and diversity in their decision-making processes.
