Marquette University is currently accepting applications for the O’Brien Fellowship in Public Service Journalism. This fellowship provides journalists with the necessary resources to delve into issues of inequality and explore potential solutions, with a focus on producing impactful and thorough journalism. Past fellows have investigated a wide range of topics including climate change, racial injustice, mental health, criminal justice, education, and maternal health.
The fellowship offers a stipend of $75,000 for nine months, as well as additional allowances for residency, moving expenses, travel, and research. Eligible applicants must have at least five years of professional journalism experience and can be affiliated with various types of media outlets. Academic qualifications are not required.
Selection criteria for the fellowship include proposing a comprehensive public service journalism project that can lead to significant reform, demonstrating the ability to complete the project during the fellowship, and integrating Marquette students into the reporting team. An advisory committee of journalists and faculty members review applications to recommend fellows to the dean of the Diederich College of Communication.
