The U.S. Department of State’s IDEAS Program has launched the 2025 IDEAS grant competition, aimed at supporting U.S. colleges and universities in expanding their study abroad programs to align with U.S. foreign policy objectives. The program, funded by the U.S. Government and implemented in collaboration with World Learning, seeks to enhance American student mobility, foster international understanding, and prepare students for careers that benefit the U.S. and local communities.
The goals of the IDEAS Program include increasing the capacity of institutions to administer study abroad programs, boosting the number of U.S. undergraduate students participating in international programs, and sharing best practices within the higher education community. Themes for project proposals cover a range of topics such as civil society, climate, democracy, economic development, global health, and technology.
The 2025 grant competition will award around 35 grants of up to $35,000 each to accredited colleges and universities. Eligible projects include creating study abroad programs, developing partnerships with international institutions, and integrating global elements into existing curricula. Proposals must primarily support U.S. undergraduate student mobility and innovative ideas for building study abroad capacity are encouraged.
Eligibility criteria require applicants to be accredited U.S. colleges or universities, proposals to focus on undergraduate student mobility, and funding not to be used for direct student costs. Institutions may submit multiple proposals, but individual units within an institution are limited to one application each. IDEAS grants can support in-person U.S. study abroad programs in countries with specific travel advisory levels and virtual programs are also eligible.
